Functional Neurologic Disorder (FND) refers to symptoms caused by problems with how the nervous system is functioning. They can be explained by “software” problems, not problems with the nervous system’s hardware that occurs in conditions such as stroke, epilepsy and multiple sclerosis.

There are typical features of FND which help trained practitioners to make a positive diagnosis. These features produce symptoms that significantly impact day-to-day activities and the quality of life of an individual. These symptoms can range from tremors, pain, headaches, abnormal sensations, weakness in the arms and legs or episodes where one blacks out or has difficulty moving the body.

Functional Neurological Symptoms are similar symptoms in an individual which are troublesome in terms of fulfilling day-to-day activities. This label can be utilized for those who wish to understand their experience without necessarily having a “disorder.”

FND and functional neurological symptoms are surprisingly common but can be difficult for patients and health professionals to understand. FND and function neurological symptoms are observed in 40 – 50% of Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms (aka: Post-Concussion Syndrome) and is highly prevalent in a variety of other neurological conditions. Learn more about FND here

Our practitioners are well-versed in the diagnosis and treatment of FND and is a strong focus of the multidisciplinary care provided at NCT.

Headaches and migraine cause mild to severe head pain that can last seconds to days. Associated symptoms are variable and may include sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, balance problems and dizziness. In some cases, vision, weakness and body sensation changes (“auras”) may occur before or during headaches.

Our approach to headache treatment is comprehensive focusing on medical and nonmedical strategies that incorporate our allied health team to include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, massage therapy, nutrition and more.

We offer general and specialized treatments that are individualized to the patient. To inquire about special treatments such as new injectable therapies, Botox or medical cannabis contact NCT today.

Headache & migraine is one of the most commonly encountered conditions worldwide which means wait times to see a headache specialist can be extensive. We offer rapid access headache clinics at NCT for headache assessment.

NCT is proud to be a primary site for research in medical cannabis for headache with future plans to explore psychedelic therapy as a treatment for Cluster Headache and Migraine.

Psychedelic Therapy for Cluster Headache & Migraine

At present, psychedelic treatments such as psilocybin (sometimes referred to as “magic mushrooms”) for the management of headache are only available through research studies and the special access program in Canada.

Our clinic continues to develop our psychedelic treatment expertise and plans to lead and host future research trials. Follow NCT on social media or call to inquire regarding the current status for these new treatments and potential to participate in future research trials.

Developmental delay describes children who are behind in meeting physical, cognitive and communicative milestones in comparison to their peers. There are numerous reasons why a child may suffer developmental delay which can vary and be temporary or long-lasting.

Tics are sudden, intermittent, repetitive, unpredictable, purposeless, nonrhythmic, involuntary movements or sounds. Tics that produce movement are called “motor tics,” while tics that produce sound are called “vocal tics” or “phonic tics.” Tics can be either simple or complex.

Tics are common and can be observed in 25% of children and are frequently seen in adults as well. The vast majority of tics do not affect a person’s ability to function but can be troublesome and affect quality of life. Tics can be embarrassing, cause discomfort and physical pain if movements are repetitive over time.

Tourette Syndrome or TS is a Neurodevelopmental or brain-based condition that usually involves movement and vocal tics lasting longer than one year.

The most important thing to understand about the tics associated with Tourette Syndrome is that the sounds and behaviours are involuntary and are not being done by choice.

NCT’s understands the concern that tics and Tourette syndrome may cause families so we are happy to provide families with expedited access to a neurologist and our partner psychologists at MindFit to offer assessment and CBIT treatment. This clinic is suitable for patients with any of the following: abnormal movements suspected to be tics, new diagnosis of tics, Tourette syndrome diagnosis, education and counseling.
